New podcast section!

One of the changes planned for our blog was the revised podcast section and it's about time we launch it. We know that some of you have had difficulties downloading the shows, sometimes because of the download limits or just because Rapidshare isn't always so nice with everyone...
From now on you have an alternative. The shows are also hosted on two different sites on "Podomatic", where you can STREAM the selected shows we uploaded. There is also a download option. However, we reduced the audio quality on Podomatic for storage reasons. (Don't worry, it's still very listenable!). So, from now on you can listen to the shows directly without waiting times and download limitations.
To sum up, on the right column you will now find 3 links.
The first one is the directory on Rapidshare, just like it used to be.
The second one is our "MAIN" site on Podomatic, where the latest Podcasts will be (for the time being empty). @ allaboutthesun.podomatic.com
The third one is our secondary site on Podomatic, an archive if you will, with some of our old shows. @ whenthelightsgoout.podomatic.com

Storage is not the only reason we divided our shows to "latest" and "older". The radio sets from now on will be a little different. But we'll talk about that when our next hit on the webwaves is imminent. Now go listen to something on the right...

The Calm Blue Sea

I realized last night that I haven't posted a single post rock album since we started, which is a shame since this blog thrives on the melancholy music provides. However, I must admit my recent departure from the post rock genre, since it seemed to be recycling the same ideas and patterns in a very non-creative way. Too many bands, few good songs and fewer (if any) good albums. But once in a while, there comes a record that reminds you that the scene is not dead.
The Calm Blue Sea don't present necessarily something new to the scene, but they have all those elements that one loves about post rock. The melodies, the emotion, the musical structure that progresses to noise. And what a nice noise that is... I also liked the use of the piano in TCBS. It kinda has an introductory role and lets later the guitars take control. The Calm Blue Sea are from Austin Texas, like the post rock heroes Explosions In The Sky. You can hear the resemblance.

Get it here.

Girls

I was lately on a search for a good new album. It has been really difficult to find something new and fresh the last few months. However, "Girls" filled the gap with their album (which is called "Album".....) and even if it isn't the record that will change your life it surely makes an impression. It reminded me for some reason of good ol' Pulp and the whole album has that narcotic feeling I get from My Bloody Valentine. And I must say, the release comes in a timely fashion, just before autumn hits for good and the summer starts to seriously fade away. And Christopher Owens seems to also struggle with that. He sings about girls, summer, about waking up in the afternoon, napping in parks and soaking up sunshine. And I have been there (except maybe napping in parks...), so I like the theme. "Hellhole Ratrace" was praised this summer in the blogosphere (and Pitchfork) as THE epic summer track and maybe it is. It simplistic, nostalgic and bittersweet feeling (and its AWESOME video. Watch it!) makes it an absolute pick for 2009.
Christopher Owens grew up in a cult and escaped when he was 16. And when he tells us in "Lust For Life" that "he's fucked in the head" I believe him. And now he sings about California girls, getting drunk and the sun... It's an interesting concept to listen to...

More Blues Brothers...

Music is art.

At least it's supposed to be, although anyone who hits me over the head with any given power metal or Tokyo Hotel cd will have a strong argument against that.
Anyway, given the concept of music as art is widely accepted by our readers, I wish to build on that ground.

People appreciate music for the most different reasons.
Some feel comforted by its spirit and soul, by the storytelling that fills the void of a world where everyone should be alone with the certainty that there are notions and fine lines that others perceive as well, ultimately challenging the disjointness of the individual from society.
Some people divulge into the orchestrations and finer points of composition of music as an intellectual exercise and greatly enjoy the beauty of the underlying order that harnesses the chaos of a world too complex to understand.
Some, then, enjoy the expressiveness of music for the sheer power of emotion, as a pure means to absorb power and energy to go on fighting their own battles (and yes, I was thinking of Iggy Pop here...).
Others need music as a companion to just blend out thought, to help slow the world down by repeating a known pattern in their head that makes them feel familiar with themselves.
Finally, some people probably just like noise.

To any and all of those people who busy themselves with this artform for any given of these reasons, I have a shocking newsflash: the very same qualities and virtues that make you put your earphones on ever so often can be found in other forms of art, as well.

If you enjoy Bob Dylan for his lyrical style that makes your mind wander, you probably enjoyed reading the Beats a great deal.
If you always find yourself connected to Velvet Underground's excessive elegance, you might seriously like the art of Andy Warhol.
And if Bolero is your music of choice, you already have a movie playing in your head and surely can't help but visiting the theatres every now and then.

Art as a form of expression knows no boundaries and has infinite channels, but the basic common ground we start from is human experience that is common to many people. No matter how distorted it comes out at the end of the processing machine that is the emotional apparatus of each human mind, the ground will be common.
And as we have devoted this blog and a lot of our time to music, we will try to share discoveries from other sources of grandeur with you as well.

As you all have noticed, music and cinematography share a very strong bond (especially within this blog). The bond is not formed only by live videos, but also highly conceptuated music videos by visual artists like Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze or David Fincher. Not to mention Jonas Akerlund, whose work with the Smashing Pumpkins has left deep impressions upon those who know it.
On the other hand, the good Doc's soundtrack special should have made it clear how much music helps movies tell a story and become part of it. There is no western without Ennio Morricone, no Star Wars or Indiana Jones without John Williams and no Fountain without Clint Mansell and Mogwai.

But alas, our time in this life is limited, we can't know it all and neither do we want to, yet the attraction is unquestionably there. Se we resort to the wisdom, knowledge and taste of others as a guide through the vast fields out there.
Personally, I have found myself to be continually impressed by the quality of observation and abundance of background information about the cinematographic side of things presented by a cherished friend and avid follower of our blog. As there has been the fortunate event of the start of his own blog about the things he believes in (I'm still anticipating his full frontal assault on graphic novels), I welcome the opportunity to defer to him in all things cinema and present his blog to all of you, who surely love the moments sitting in the dark room with the newest Tarantino flick starting as much as me.

This also marks the inauguration of our "Recommended" section to the right, which shall slowly be enriched with sources of infinite knowledge and wisdom (fandom?).
So please enjoy, and if you happen to find sth. that absolutely cannot be missed feel free to make us richer for it.

As the warming summer sun sets...

We're sorry for all the delays and broken promises (when it comes to our blog activity). You will soon have me back.
This has been a weird year and a weird summer. Fittingly, the autumn is coming on in a consuming fashion.

Losses tend to uproot us, leave us like the ship without an anchor, vainly trying to reach shore against the tide of the ever-receding waves.
I guess I will have to relearn the whole thing, embrace being alone, the freedom that comes with it, the independence.
I never wanted all of this, but I couldn't find it in me to hold on anymore. I didn't have the energy to cling on with teeth and nails, so I let go.
I stopped trying to fix things, trying to make myself understood.

I wish I knew the right notes.
I wish I had the right colours....the right words.
I wish.

But I don't. And I didn't. And that's it.

Game Over, everyone lost.

Summer Ends In Static

After a two-month break we were once again on the webwaves. It was a special night, since this set was a musical carpet (probably the first of two) to the exit from the summer. A what a summer that was... Long and short. Bitter and sweet. Drunken (as it turns out) and sober. But all in all very enjoyable. After all, I finally got to read my newspaper at a beach bar... The 4,5-hour set is up for you to download in the usual podcast section. And although the first part wasn't as lucid as it was supposed to be, the second part went where it had to go. To the acoustic daze and the post-rock-ish games that went on my head the two last months. Hope you enjoy it and try to connect with it the way you (really) should.

I have discovered that all of mans unhappiness derives from only one source, not being able to sit quietly in a room
- Blaise Pascal

Maybe we enforce our unhappiness that way, by listening to music the whole time. I guess, in a way, I will always be unhappy...
But Eddie asks why go home... Wayne if I realize. Thom tells that true love waits. Craig B. says that falling asleep on my chest is enough. Kazu, that misery is a butterfly. Bjork pushes in a state of emergency...

And the riddle gets solved...

Fight to get it back again...

See you around.

We.......

The blog has been on tour the last week and witnessed a lot... We traveled with planes, trains, buses, cars. We had a near death experience. We saw old flames. We were reminded who we once were... We got sick. We pursued something. We fell on our face. We learned about "sweetpotatoes". We spent all our money. Partially on our transportations, partially on alcohol and partially on the “übergeile” concerts we watched...
We were fortunate enough to watch Faith No More and the sick Mike Patton and Pearl Jam and the GREAT Eddie Vedder...

And we present here the whole concert of Faith No More in Athens. Thanks to Youtube and the subscriber 22RAT. Pearl Jam videos and review will follow. I will leave that to the expert...

We are going to close SUMMER 2009 with one or two Radio Shows... Come back next week.

Radiohead - These Are My Twisted Words

Radiohead hit again this week. Fortunately, because SUMMER 2009 couldn't pass without some new Radiohead. "Harry Patch" was a nice song, still a B-side though. This time Radiohead offered us a proper song. With a wicked guitar and a haunted voice. To be honest, I didn't expect a track like that any more... "These Are My Twisted Words". Radiohead will always be sad. And so are we.

Radiohead - Harry Patch (In Memory Of)

Radiohead. New song. Sad and beautiful.

Thom's original post:

Harry Patch (In Memory Of)
"i am the only one that got through
the others died where ever they fell
it was an ambush
they came up from all sides
give your leaders each a gun and then let them fight it out themselves
i've seen devils coming up from the ground
i've seen hell upon this earth
the next will be chemical but they will never learn"

Recently the last remaining UK veteran of the 1st world war Harry Patch died at the age of 111.
I had heard a very emotional interview with him a few years ago on the Today program on Radio4.
The way he talked about war had a profound effect on me.
It became the inspiration for a song that we happened to record a few weeks before his death.
It was done live in an abbey. The strings were arranged by Jonny.
I very much hope the song does justice to his memory as the last survivor.

It would be very easy for our generation to forget the true horror of war, without the likes of Harry to remind us.
I hope we do not forget.

As Harry himself said
"Irrespective of the uniforms we wore, we were all victims".

This morning the Today program played the song for the first time and now it is available to download from our website.

Please click here to download.

The proceeds of this song will go to the British Legion.

To peace and understanding.
Thom

Here is a YouTube of the song. Followed by "I Want None Of This", a similar release by Radiohead for the War Child charity album "Help: A Day in the Life"
We will not offer the song for download. You can buy it HERE
And you should. (WE KNOW you put 0.00 £ on the InRainbows-website!)

Animated Music Videos Tribute

Two arts combined. Two arts we love. Music and animation. After the soundtracks radio show, it was time we posted a mix of music and moving pictures. Some of the best music videos have used the power of animation and a wide selection is presented in this post. Below you will find two playlists. (Sorry about the multiple windows, but dailymotion is your friend when it comes to copyrighted material...)
The majority of the videos feature favorite songs. And some are included mainly because of their nice artistic ideas... As always, some obsessions are there in more than one video. (Radiohead, Bjork, Tool..)
Here are the links of the playlists in the original hosting sites for better quality. (But don't browse away......)
Playlist 1 (YouTube)
Playlist 2 (Dailymotion)

I must admit we are on fire lately. 5 posts in one week... Summer wounds... Suppressed energy...

Γ. Αγγελάκας & οι Επισκέπτες - 14.07.09, Μύλος, Θεσσαλονίκη / G. Aggelakas & oi Episkeptes - 14.07.2009, Mylos, Thessaloniki

Our days in the sunny side of the world were not that many, but thankfully we got to see one of our favorite greek artists live on stage. Summer breeze, some alcohol, good friends and great songs were the elements that added one more highlight in that great summer we had... We will probably come back with a detailed tribute to the artist himself, his current projects, as well as the legendary band "Trypes". Until then, YouTube is your friend. Below you will find a playlist with our videos from the concert. Only the first song is taken from another live-set, but the awesomeness of the song made it necessary to put on screen the whole 2009 live version... Visit our YouTube channel for better quality and for the High Definition Videos!

Special thanks goes to Marina and her incredible new HD Camera! (We must get ourselves one of those...)

Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound - When Sweet Sleep Returned

Thought I'd get you back a bit as an audience after losing you for so long. The fact that the city is burning (or feels like it) made me realize that people need more fuzz. Minds are often boggled when the heat is up...

San Francisco’s Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound is a soundtrack for strange days and futures bright and bleak. But there is also a crooked thread that runs backward through every Assemble Head record—the celestial trajectories of The Notorious Byrd Brothers and circa ‘70 Floyd; the dusty canyon stomps of Crazy Horse, slashing action pop of the savage young Who, Italian bastardizations of Lalo Schifrin cop movie scores, and the scuzz-bomb shrapnel of latter-day garage mongers like Mudhoney and Monoshock.

The band’s third LP, When Sweet Sleep Returned, is propelled to some extent by that same glorious distillate. But it also finds the group speaking their own twisted tongue more assuredly than ever — marrying hazy Saturday moods,Cuervo shots, interstellar sonics and wrecking-ball swing to song and harmony in poems for California, lovers, ghosts, the stars, ourselves and a world gone stark raving mad.

Think of it as the opposition to my last offering to you. Yin and Yang.

hint: Track 2(Two Birds) - heavenly sonic delusion on strings

Ossein - Sativa

This is more of a dark, evil, psychotic (yet melodic in its own right) soundscape than an album. I know, I know..you have been treated to a summer mood for quite some time now. And you thought it would go on forever now, did you? Oh, well... fools.
I guess words about the music are not exactly capable of capturing what's going on here, so I will quote a legend to give you an idea.

"It is better to make a piece of music than to perform one, better to perform one than to listen to one, better to listen to one than to misuse it as a means of distraction, entertainment, or acquisition of culture."
-John Cage

"Two Riders Were Approaching"

"The task was to fill exactly one CD (that is 80mins max) with a melange of tunes new and old, weird and commercial, uplifting, loud, crazy, unexpected, beloved, typical and whatever else they might be.
As long as they form a collection that we'd like to listen to this summer.
The task was to make a group of songs that make us want to dance, drive faster, drink a mojito more, feel alive and embrace the nostalgic moments a summer has to offer.
Did we fulfill our tasks? I strongly doubt so..too ambitious, too little time.
Nevertheless, the results of our quest will be played this evening in a special AboutTheSunCast and we will offer our CD's as a download for you to burn and spin through the summer."

The post above, our blog duties in general and our worries were left behind for the last 3 weeks, since your favorite bloggers rested (or so we keep telling ourselves) on the golden beaches of the three legged-paradise... As far as we're concerned, the tasks were fulfilled. We drove listening to our CDs, we went to a concert, we drank a mojito or a "submarine" more, we danced (a bit), we fought over my need to read a newspaper and we finally met Sr. Cartmanez's mentor's brother!
But since the summer is not over for many of you, our three compilation CDs are available for you to download and enjoy with the sun hitting your face.
"The Sun Smells Too Loud". Summer 2010 awaits us... Better, stronger and drunker...
Two Riders Were Approaching, Vol. 1, Vodka Gimlet, Sr. Cartmanez
Two Riders Were Approaching, Vol. 2, Joker's Tea, Dr. Mephesto
Two Riders Were Approaching, Vol. 3, Whiskey, Double, Sr. Cartmanez

Twit-Twit-Twit...

As you are all well aware by now, we are always searching for methods to push the bar further and incorporate fancy new technology and trends into our tireless (uhm...yeah) efforts to reach you guys with our musical tastes.

So we just had to include Twitter into this endeavour. thus you could expect the occasional tweet from one of us to appear on both twitter and on the right on the top right of this blog saying that we are bored with the Boredoms, drinking coffee to Blur, eating icecream with some Slayer, driving our cars (dude...where is my car?) to some Pelican while watching the waves or anything of the sort.
Yes, we want to share those cute little moments that we so often describe and it will help us harness the occasional spontaneous moment to communicate with you guys.
You might also want to drop in to leave us a comment if you liked a certain idea or notion, so as usual, it is meant to be VERY interactive.

We do all of this for you, people...

"There is no spoon..."

Another successful Radio Show has come to pass. Once again, a big thank you to our listeners. The recording from the Soundtracks tribute is now available for you to download. Sorry about the delay, but we had to put all our audio engineering skills in motion to fix some problems. The result is of high quality for you to enjoy properly. In other news, all podcasts have been updated, with better ID3 tags and some artwork. We are perfectionists...(when we want!)
Also, all the links from the "Music" section have been updated, since most of them were inactive. So, those of you who listen to us only from the web-radio, have a look at the albums, it's really worth it. Again, the promise for more music posts, stays...
Before the end of June, another special tribute will be presented, so we can send you away in groovy, psychedelic and pretty fucked up fashion for the summer! Stay tuned...

Very Smooth

I promised to explain the origin of the tag "Christian Brothers" on Friday.
Well, there you go... (although personally I usually stick with Mr.Jack. You know, Mr.J.D. was no saint, but he did start something of a religion)

And don't forget: It's better with brandy !

The Rorschach Inkblot

On Friday night our Radio came once again to life. Few were there to enjoy a really remarkable set by Sr. Cartmanez. A show, which I think will be a measure to the next dark (and loud) acoustic sets to come. I'm sure many will follow.
For those of you who missed it, it is there (in our podcast directory) for you to listen on demand. When the time is right, when the weather is shitty, when your inner self rebels again and needs to express itself.
In the last months these radio shows have suddenly become the first priority of the blog. I guess it's the best output for the present time for your two favorite bloggers. And it is in this last show, that a visualisation of our musical nature as a duo came to mind... We are a Rorschach Inkblot.
We invite you to get lost. When the ink transforms into notes, when the notes get amplified, when the amplifiers challenge our neurons.
The trip continues...

Announcement and a thank you note...

In about an hour, All About The Sun Radio will once again be on the air. It's the first time a follow-up show is too soon, but you should get used to it, since we have a lot of ideas for the near future.
Posts will appear again in a regular basis and the announced BEST OF 2008 will also be ready soon. Keep coming back.

We want to thank all of you who were with us on Sunday. Hopefully we'll be playing together again soon. The technical difficulties were (as usual) present. An apology for the abrupt ending, but everything went suddenly down.
The recorded show will be in the podcast directory sometime today. Probably during or after Sr. Cartmanez's set. You can find all of them if you click on the respective picture on the right.

See you later...

Modeselektor - Happy Birthday RMX (1-3)

So after yesterday's philosophical treatise on bad mood has finally been washed away in a torrent of water, aspirin and Café Crema I decided to elevate your hearts and minds with a weekend-friendly selection of music from our beloved Modeselektor.
Yes, the same bass-crazed electronica crew that opened for Radiohead on their last tour and makes music that is almost criminally danceable.
These guys helped me realize how awesome the woofers are on my new desktop speaker-set, so I recommend that you blast this stuff all day long before you go out.

The 3 ep's lined up here represent remixes of a cool album by them, made by many artists of fame and glory and listening to it enough will absolutely melt your brain and get you pumped up and ready to face the challenges of any nightclub.

Keep kids dancing

A prince amongst the castaways

Bear with me through this.
Give me some patience.
I have no idea right now where I am going to take this post, but coming home this evening I felt the strong urge to scream out all the pain and frustration that this ordinary life has beset upon me.
Reasons? Why, oh why, should you want to ask for reasons?
Have you never had the feeling that certain days smother you, that the air seems too thin to inhale..
That you were nothing but a poor paisano who is denied even the small mercy of a fruit jar filled with bad wine to help you battle the hardships of reality?
This day I felt every moment of my life bearing down upon me like a heavy brick.
I was out, at a birthday party. Merry people all around me, girls dancing, the spirits were flowing.. and yet the remorse of the pen seemingly is all the confrontation with myself that I can take right now. So I will return to my original statement:
Bear with me this evening. For I may not appeal to your senses right at this point when you are reading this, but a day will befall you when you will be in my skin, appaled at the joy of each breathing soul, unable to connect to anything in your surroundings. Disgusted. Dissociative.

Anti-Zen.

So I returned and found comfort in my music and the description of my sentiments.
It seems that there is music to cover each sentiment, and woe to the person who has discovered the tunes that speak to the deepest fibres of seclusion within his or her twisted soul. It may well be that each person finds serenity in a different piece of music. But if you find it, wherever that may be, beware of the small hours when doubt enters your mind and eats away at your conscience.
Why does the human soul have mechanisms like this?
Why are we not able to simply go with the flow, enjoy the limited ride we have earned with our precious ticket to the park called life?
Why does man have to yearn for shapeless, nameless, undefined ghosts within himself?

I am grateful for this yearning. It makes me feel alive. I hurt, so I am.
How dreadfully mundane would it be to only laugh when told a joke, to only cry when being wronged, to only react accordingly to each and every input. It is a sign of slight victory over harsh reality that sometimes the human mind rises above each material thing and defying all logic produces unpredictable results.
The tarnished mood in a seemingly perfect day could well be the seed of wonder and beauty within the obliterating gloom of other, darker times. The human mind, through these lapses of reasons, through these leaps of faith, is able to overcome the factual truth, while reaching out for what lies beyond.
We dream, so we are. I thus welcome each such nightmare as today, as it walks hand in hand with the subtle promise of light.

I wish you all a good night, may you feel as relieved as I do after writing this.

These are sungod days, my friends. Gifts we sometimes cannot appreciate when given, yet unique in how they burn their way eternally into our memories.

I respectfully raise my glass to Danny, the demon from Monterey.

Radio Update

Due to unforeseen technical diffculties owing to the acute lack of grey matter that has befallen the german telecommunication companies the starting point of the upcoming show will have to be postponed for a little while, until our leprechauns -who are working frantically just for you- will have our hamsters up and running to fire up the backup systems. Bear with us a few more minutes and don't spoil your evening by listening to The Killers or so.

Patience is a virtue and you won't need much of it until you will be able to once more enjoy one of our trademark evenings filled with vices of the alcoholic sort and good music.

Don't forget:

All About The Sun Radio UPDATE 2

The polls are now closed and the public has decided for Wednesday! So, as the banner above indicates, we will be transmitting tomorrow, 18.03.2009 at 20:00 Central Europe Time. We have a special theme planned, a tribute to Porcupine Tree. This will open the show and go for about 2 - 2,5 hours and then we'll switch to a more radio-like playlist for the rest of the night.
This is the first one of a series of tributes we have in mind for the future. The next ones will be structured in a different way, will cover a whole scene, genre or a specific musical era and probably last the whole evening. We want to be, more then anything, educational! But these ideas will follow. This is an experiment, focusing on one (really great) band and we hope you'd like it.

And a little background information...

Porcupine Tree is the main musical vehicle of Steven Wilson, an iconic figure in the scene, through the years, mainly for the multiple projects he's constantly involved in as a songwriter, instrumentalist, producer.
Porcupine Tree focused at the beginning on their psychedelic side, going later through more Progressive Rock paths and finally in the last decade incorporating many metal elements in their albums. The influences are many, we will go over them tomorrow as we listen to different periods of the band.

The time we will spend on the show seems really little to cover the enormous discography of Porcupine Tree and this is why this was labeled Part 1. Part 2 may or may not follow. We'll see. Our aim generally is to intrigue you to listen to new sounds and reveal to you the stuff that seems to make OUR lives INTERESTING, BEAUTIFUL, MISERABLE, LIGHTER AND DARKER every day... Trust us, we know...

E.D, T.K.

All About The Sun Radio UPDATE

Hello to all. This is an update about some new stuff on the blog. On the right you will find the long overdue Podcast of the last show by Sr. Cartmanez. Well, part of it... We had, once again, some technical difficulties and the whole show has not been recorded. Our technical support team (who consists of hundreds of people) worked day and night for the last month to bring you ....40 minutes of Sr. Cartmanez's musical wisdom. It's better then nothing, I suppose. Could serve as a little reminder of a really nice evening. However, for those of you who listened to something you really liked, we also posted the playlist of that night. You can find it in two formats. A text-only version and (since we like beeing interactive) in the form of a Last.fm playlist. The second option means that you can listen to a part of the majority of the songs played. (Unfortunately not all of them, but that's just because Last.fm's database doesn't come near to our endless musical horizon...!). So, you can, in a way, recreate parts of that evening, see again the songs that kept you company and perhaps look for them.

The second part of this update is about OUR NEXT RADIO EVENING! On the right you will find a poll... There you can vote the day in the following week that suits you best to tune in and keep us company. So, vote and come back to see when we're going to be online again.
Greetings!

Prodigy, 03.03.2009, E-Werk, Cologne

Prodigy rocked the house on 03.03.2009 in Cologne and we were there to witness it. After five years of absence Prodigy return with a brand new album and the promotional tour. This was the first time I saw them live and I could say that they still deliver! The show was really powerful and the new album is pretty good. Prodigy will not change music like they did 20 years ago, but who cares? We can still dance our asses off...
Below, as usual, some photos and videos to get the idea.
The first one is a compilation of our own recordings. The second one is a YouTube playlist from the best (AND FULL) videos we could find.

Get provoked!

Since our last post has a fucked up ugly picture and many people will be visiting tonight I thought I posted something more appealing to the eye...
Maybe some of you had a bad Valentine's day... You'll see there's worse.
We have always been supporters of the noble cause of Agent Provocateur. Another great advertisement has been posted here long ago. Look for it!

Impaled Northern Moonforest

Since it is obvious that I have taken some time off the productive part of feeding this blog lately, I decided to bridge the gap until the top list of last year appears with something that will be completely useless to about 99.9% of you listeners.
It is actually musically completely useless to anyone.
No one can like this. (except certain people living on spanish islands who are hopefully reading this post)
But believe me, if you can't laugh about this stuff, you are dead.

So, I guess you are all aware of Black Metal.
Yes, evil scandinavians living in the woods eating raw meat and painting their faces when they go out on the stage with their battleaxes and create noise that sounds just like a dying pig being hit repeatedly on a frying pan. They don't worship Satan because that's wimpy. The vikings would have called them Thor and occasionally churches spontaneously combust when a Black Metal band is in town.

A lot of people have made fun of that.
A lot of people failed.

So here I present to you the best attempt I could encounter in the long history of the struggle against bad music that we have taken upon us.
It is black metal, for real. It's completely insane. It has the brilliantly poser-evil titles, the ridiculous attempt at a cover, EVERYTHING.

And it's acoustic.

This Is (Also) Sparta!

Sleepercar is the side project of Jim Ward, the vocalist and mastermind of Sparta. And of course, member of the legendary At The Drive-In. (But come on, you should know that stuff already...)
So, Sleepercar is according to Wikipedia an alternative country project. Fortunately (even if the world alternative makes it believable), the album has little to do with country and could easily be another Sparta album. Maybe one with b-sides. But the characteristic voice of Ward is there, as well as the sentimental chords and melodies that he always gave us with Sparta.
This album made my day today and I listened to it in the back- and in the foreground many times. Well done, Jim.
Don't paddle away...

"9, you shall protect the future..."

9 is a short animated film by Shane Acker. It has won several awards and an Academy Award Nomination.
The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic environment, where we meet the main character 9 and his somewhat mentor and protector 5.
On 09.09.2009, 9 comes as full-length feature, directed by its original creator, Shane Acker, and produced by the one and only Tim Burton.

Below we have for you the original 10-minute short film and if you scroll down further, the very well done trailer for the movie.
And since we always have a connection to music, the song of the trailer is "Welcome Home" by "Coheed and Cambria" and really adds to the atmosphere. You can hear and watch it from the link on the bottom.

LOST

First of all a big thank you to all of you who tuned in yesterday and made our first broadcast experiment a very special one. We will be on the air again very soon. Better and louder! (And with smarter things to say...)
The only thing you have to do is check regularly on the blog.
I promised yesterday that the show would be available as a podcast for you to download, if there weren't any technical irregularities. And guess what. There were! All our curses are targeted to that little software company, which made the lame program I used to record. And it seemed to be working. Check back soon for the official All About The Sun-Voodoo-Doll so we can take them down properly!
So, our first show is forever LOST from the hard drives, until we find Benjamin Linus and THE ISLAND to make things right again...
We apologize to the listeners who didn't understand a word we were saying, but I guess that's the way it's gonna be, at least on my end. Hopefully you won't abandon us and tune in for the music. Posts remain (mostly) in English...
Until next time!

You're thinking of all the jobs you could retire from

You keep telling me everything's gotta be real

Yes,  the extremely devoted readers (more than a thousand now, I am told) of our blog already have grasped what this is about. Because, indeed, your memory does not fail you, those were lyrics from the song Atomic Heels by the Secret Machines, the video to which Doc was kind enough to post a while ago.

But that was just the single.

As I've been busy reliving the highs and the lows of the past year (only musically, of course, optherwise everything is  as usual. Devastatingly so) it occured to me that the secret machines are a band that deserve special mention. I first stumbled upon them when I got a promo of their first album in a cardboard sleeve sent to my house by warner back in the day when buying their music actually meant something to the music industry and they tried to send you stuff to review that might be interesting later for clients with similar tastes. I even had to fill out forms to get those promos. Scary stuff, I tell ya. Anyways, "Now here is nowhere" was born, and I actually liked it a lot, but something was still missing from their music, some sort of... rock edge.
It was artsy, we like artsy, but it wasn't dirty enough to quite fit into that 70's psychedelia corner it tried to belong to. Then the Secret Machines went on to release a pile of very mediocre stuff and I had all but forgotten about them.
This year they took their bags and left warner (or were left...I am not entirely sure) and released a new album, without a major label backing them. It sounds cliché, but that did it.
Apparently it was all that was needed to do the trick.
Let me get a bit clearer on this. They did not do houses of the holy here, but this album actually blends rock, psych and some glam and space seamlessly and produces very enjoyable music.
Especially the second half of the album (starting with "The walls are starting to crack") is killing it sonically and will appeal to most avid readers of this blog. So be patient through the first few catchy tracks, the heavy druggy stuff is coming for you and it presents some glaring moments of pink floyd helicopter-oganza in all their glory.

So, here is the self titled recent album by The Secret Machines, cherish it if only for the second half and the brilliant mellowing "I never thought to ask" right between the heavy freakout tracks. It has style, and we all like style.

Also the new age ballad "Now you're gone" will go brilliantly with some heartache and an illuminated city at night to drive around in. Try it.

Rise Up and Fight !

I wanted to share something great I saw recently with you all.

Just when you thought it was all over......

OK

Once again we find ourselves in the studio, this time recording some tunes for the vinyl edition of the new album, it's getting complicated but it keeps you on ye toe's. These songs will not appear anywhere on the various CD versions, there's three (3) ditties....."Ballad Of Richard Greyson", "A Mouthfull Of Secrets" and a super dirty version of "Physical (You're So)".

So, we will have a release date very soon for the albums and we'll post the details of the various different versions, plus news of the U.S. / Canada tour which is being booked at the moment.

Also, we have new blood in our ranks, these ghosts took physical form in the men they call Karl Demata, Joe Allen & John Langley, they make us sound good. We started rehearsing again after a break of 6/7 months without playing live, seems like an age! So things are on course and looking quite good.

See.....i am being good and positive, like i'm told to be more. No cynicism this time.....but that won't last!!! (see what i did there?).

And.

After watching the news about the happenings in Athens and the rest of Greece, i am compelled.to dedicate "Rise Up And Fight" to all of you there.

Ta-RAA y'shitters!

JG/CBP

I took this straight from the myspace page of Crippled Black Phoenix.
Obviously it wouldn't be complete without the song itself, the song so graciously devoted to the struggling lost masses. So, after strongly advising you to visit their site and listen to everything there and buy everything they put out even if it is just flavoured coffee with their faces on the packaging, here's "Rise Up and fight".

Yes, it sounds Pink Floyd-ish all the right kinds of ways. Yes, we will have more of this when the times is ripe. No, the new albums (there will be two) are not out yet, but yes, they will be terrific and keep us busy on this blog for quite a while,  is what my gut tells me.
If you don't believe me, have a sneak peak of what is to come while sitting in the dark somewhere and -obviously- paying attention and sipping a drink or two (you'll have time for three and need them you will).

Oh, and lest I forget in my silly ways....

turn up the volume

Open the Champagne...

I just noticed I was the 1000th visitor in our blog.
I'd like to take a moment and thank the people that made that, with their 20 hits, possible.
Time to celebrate!

Faust - IV

"Daddy, take a Banana. Tomorrow is Sunday!"

Bonkers. That's what this music is. In a beautiful way.

I consider it a perfect way to get to know Faust, so fill that glass with absinth, crawl into your favourite corner and put some headphones on.

Unleash the armageddon

Get Reverie by Daturah.
This is the image that the brilliant opener Ghost Track of this neat little post-rock band conjured in my mind.

Waltzing along
